OUIJA “Selenophile Impia” EP/2021/Negra Nit Distro

We will talk about one of the longest-lived Black metal bands in Spain. Their beginnings date back to 1995 and they have released two albums such as the most classic and acclaimed "Riding Into funeral Paths" from 1997 and "Ave Voluptatis Carnis" in 2013. The only negative thing that could be attributed to this band is that in so long, they have not been very constant as a band, although despite this, they have achieved a great number of followers and not only in Spain. The first album was highly acclaimed at that time and constitutes a jewel for the Spanish Black metal scene.  

After eight years without releasing anything, they surprised us with this three-track EP. Judging by the songs’ quality and the maturity in the compositions, I would dare to say that they come for more. According to Midgard’s own words, vocalist and founder, the new lineup is solid and promises interesting songs. He is accompanied by Map on guitar and also founder, Labelua on drums, Shogoth on bass and JM101 on the other guitar. This new EP was licensed by a smaller label compared to previous releases, but this new label is more oriented to Black metal and can connect them more directly with the darkest hordes. 

As I said earlier, this EP is composed of three tracks and lasts 19 minutes and a few seconds. I would dare to assure you and recommend the song that titles the EP and the one that starts the recording: "Selenophile Impia". I think it is the song where you should measure the new that OUIJA is offering. It's fast, rabious, but very well crafted Black metal. It has that aggressiveness but at the same time manages to transmit the serenity and calm caused by observing the moon. Personally, this song takes the prize of being the best one, although it would not be fair if it did not mention the frenetic at times "Kerberos... Like Hell Dogs" and the evocative "Therianthropic Involution". These three songs surprised by their balanced composition and do not fall into the category of linear or boring Black metal. 

I would highlight the mature voice of Midgard in the personal interpretations.  There will be someone who missed his more raspy voice in previous albums, but personally, here is a voice that continues to sound Black, and that in my opinion rounds and completes better the new recording. The drummer is very accurate and masterfully accompanies all the songs mood changes and in the guitars, although I am used to guitar solos, in the song "Selenophile Impia", to cite an example, you do not miss it because the theme is well-worked in terms of riffs and harmonies.  

I invite you to listen to the new material that OUIJA is putting in our faces and for those who do not know them yet, check them out because you will be surprised at these veterans’ quality. In recent interviews they have revealed that will be releasing an album next year, so you guys be pending. "Selenophile Impia" has been a good advance and a very hopeful release because it denotes a lot of musical solidity and compositional maturity. They are still angry but they are already working and moderating that fury better. Well, nothing, get your copy with Negra Nit Distro or to listen to them on digital platforms. 9/10

OUIJA “Selenophile Impia” EP/2021/Negra Nit Distro

Estamos en presencia de una de las bandas de Black metal mas longevas de España. Sus inicios datan desde 1995 y han lanzado dos discos como el mas clasico “Riding Into funeral Paths” de 1997 y “Ave Voluptatis Carnis” en el 2013. Lo unico negativo que le pudiera achacar a esta banda es que en tanto tiempo no han sido muy constantes como banda, aunque a pesar de esto han logrado una cantidad de seguidores y no solo en España, ya que el primer disco fue muy aclamado en su momento y constituye una joya para la escena del black metal española. 

Despues de ocho años sin sacar material sonoro, nos sorprenden con este EP de tres cortes. A juzgar por la calidad de los temas y la madurez en las composiciones me atreveria a decir que vienen por mas. Segun las palabras de Midgard, vocalista y fundador el nuevo lineup es solido y promete interesantes composiciones. Lo acompañan Map en la guitarra y tambien fundador, Labelua en la bateria, Shogoth en el bajo y JM101 en la otra guitarra. Este nuevo EP salio licenciado por un sello mas pequeño en comparacion con los lanzamientos anteriores, pero este nuevo sello esta mas orientado al black metal y los puede conectar mas directamente con las huestes mas oscuras.

Como dije anteriormente este EP se compone de tres tema y dura 19 minutos y unos cuantos segundos. Me atreveria a asegurarles y recomendarles la cancion qure le da nombre al EP y la que inica la grabacion. “Selenophile Impia” considero que es la cancion por donde deben medir lo nuevo que OUIJA esta ofreciendo. Es black metal rapido, rabioso pero muy bien elaborado. Tiene esa agresividad pero al mismo tiempo logra transmitir la serenidad y la calma que provoca observar la luna. En lo personal esta cancion se lleva el premio de la mejor del EP, aunque no seria justo si tampoco mencionara la frenetica por momentos “Kerberos… Like Hell Dogs” y la evocadora “Therianthropic Involution”. Son tres temas que sorprenden por su balanceada composicion y para nada caen en la categoria de Black metal lineal o aburrido.

En las interpretaciones personales destacaria la madura voz de Midgard, habra alguien que exxtrañe su voz mas rasposa de discos anteriores, pero en lo personal aqui hay un registro que sigue sonando Black, y que en mi opinion redondea y completa mejor la nueva propuesta. El baterista es muy certero y acompana magistralmente todos los cambios de animos en las canciones y en las guitarras, a pesar de que estoy acostumbrado a los solos de guitarra, en la cancion “Selenophile Impia”, por citar un ejemplo, no lo echas de menos porque el tema esta bien trabajado en terminos de riffs y armonias. 

En lo personal, los invito a escuchar lo nuevo que OUIJA esta presentando y los que no los conocen chequeenlos porque se sorprenderan de la calidad de estos veteranos. En recientes entrevistas han dejado entredicho que sacaran un disco el proximo año, asi que esten pendientes. “Selenophile Impia” ha sido un buen adelanto y un lanzamiento muy esperanzador porque se denota mucha solidez musical y madurez compositiva. Todavia siguen rabiosos pero ya trabajan y moderan mejor la furia. Pues nada, a conseguir su copia con Negra Nit Distro o a escucharlos en las plataformas digitales. 9/10
