“We plead the fifth on that one.”

LAMENT CONFIGURATION
Technical Death Metal from Denton, Texas (2017).
Line up:
Jake: Guitar/Backing Vox, Sam: Guitar/Backing Vox, Jared: Bass/Backing Vox, Micah: Main Vox, and Joe: Drums.
1. When and where was the band founded or What year did it originate and by who?
“Joe, Jared, and Sam formed the band from the remainder of a previous project in late 2017. The three of them enjoyed working with each other and the old school-tinged music they were creating together. Several lineup changes later, Micah and Jake joined in 2022 and that lineup persists to this day.”
2. What Genre / Sub-genre would you classify yourselves as?
“Old school-flavored technical Death metal, with some prog thrown in for fun.”
3. Who are some of the band’s influences?
“DEATH, DYING FETUS, DIMMU BORGIR, SUFFOCATION, CYNIC, GORGUTS, DECAPITATED, old OPETH, STRAPPING YOUNG LAD, NEVERMORE, VIRVUM, MESHUGGAH, CHILDREN OF BODOM, THE MISFITS, THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER and pretty much any project that Gene Hoglan played in.”
4. How did the band name come about?
“It started as a Hellraiser reference but took on new meaning for Joe after he broke a couple ribs ahead of playing a bunch of shows back in 2018. The lyrical themes often involve suffering, fascination with the grotesque, and classic horror/death metal topics like corruption and systemic violence. So, in a way the band name is reflected in the themes.”
5. How would you describe the music you typically create?
“The goal from the beginning has always been to sound unique. To create wacky tunes that other people aren’t. Even if we’re playing one of our more straight-ahead songs, we like to put our spin on the traditional and keep it interesting for the listener.”
6. For those of us seeking identification through music, is there a certain message you are trying to portray?
“As a whole there isn’t some overarching philosophy other than a love of music and playing it. There’s no agenda other than to stimulate your brain with brutality.”
7. Where has the band performed?
“Mostly in DFW and Texas. We’ve played great venues that have since closed like Tomcats, Wits End, The Blue Light, The Door, and The Curtain Club. We’ve also played places like Come And Take It down in Austin, The Haltom Theater, Andy’s in Denton, Ridglea Theater and our personal favorite, Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios.”
8. What was the experience like recording Clickbait Hemorrhage?
“You know it’s funny, one of our members went through exactly what this song is about recently. It’s about information overload and so many different entities after you for your time, energy, attention and money at all hours, endlessly. It’s enough to make you scream sometimes. Or in his case he got off social media and still is, at least for now.”

9. Tell us about your upcoming single?
“Can’t say too much at this point. It’s about a similar theme to Clickbait but with a focus on the predatorial entities themselves and how they come to exist and sustain themselves.”
10. We want to know what a day in the life of LAMENT CONFIGURATION’s rehearsal room is like?
“We plead the fifth on that one.”
11. How do you feel about performing for your fans at the Haltom Theatre this coming March 8?
“It’s our first time on the side stage. One of our guys went and saw a show there not too long ago and it seems pretty well-suited to local death metal shows. There’s kind of a house show vibe with most of the band at ground level with the crowd. We’ll be playing new songs and y’all won’t have a chance to see us again until May so take advantage of this opportunity. We have such sounds to show you.”
12. Any words of encouragement for those stepping onto their very first stage experience?
“The past few years have been pretty brutal for musicians, so you need to have that fire to create and play music with an edge that isn’t already being made. Find a niche, instrument, and genre that suits you and that you feel comfortable in. Music should be a part of your life that never fully goes away, even when you’re away from your instrument or not using it. And if you insist on playing what is already being played, you have to be better than who is already doing it. The good news is that with patience, practice, and determination you can become as good as you want to be. Your attitude determines whether the work is a burden, joy or an endless chasm to get there.”
And for your fans?
“Thank you for the support over the years! We’re just glad to still be chugging along and writing new music. So that we can play it for y’all and you can smash into each other and dance and get all the bad shit out that the world craps on us every day. Forget your troubles for a moment on a trip to Riff City. We’ll meet you there, friends.”
