AMONGRUINS "Land of the Black Sun" (Theogonia Records/2023)
Greece is a land of great extreme bands like ROTTING CHRIST, VARATHRON, SEPTIC FLESH, more heavy metal like FIREWIND and many others. However, the band that concerns us in this review leans towards a more melodic vein; and first NIGHTRAGE’s albums come to mind. AMONGRUINS began in 2012 as a project between several friends and released the first album "Bring Out Your Dead" in 2013, in a raw but different Death-metal style back then. The second "No Light" came out three years later, and the band began to take off and be noticed. This record featured Tuomas (WOLFHEART / BEFORE THE DAWN) in the song that names the album. And that's how we got to "Land of the Black Sun", seven years later.
This third album still has many points of contact with the previous one, and is a good sign, because they did not change the style despite time. They stayed on the same string, although they slowed down on speed, but added more intensity to the songs. AMONGRUINS is a four-piece formed by Sotiris “Sverd” (vocals, bass & key), Thanos (guitars), Alex Flouros (guitars) and Nick Friligos (drums), and they care about melodies a lot. However, they are not the typical act that follows the Gothenburg domain but builds dark harmonies within their music. I would like to call it: the Hellenic obscure approach. All this darkness is super well reinforced with the powerful voice and keyboard passages from Sverd. I confess that the vocal aspect is one of the instruments that moves me the most in this album, because it distances itself a lot from the Swedish source and brings them closer to their own identity.

AMONGRUINS with "Land of the Black Sun" keeps up the melodic structures but you can also notice a close relationship with a slow or rhythmical Death approach, and Doomy at times. That’s why this album shows a more mature concept and unveils more technique. There is no rush to exhibit remarkable performances in "Tear Me Apart", the song that opens the album. It is followed by another Toumas Saukkonen’s feature by performing an acoustic guitar intro in "End of My Fall". The fiery "Shattered Times" and "Our Destructive Tide" bring you back somewhat to the second disc and emphasize in melody. "Wells of War", at first, takes me back to a mid-paced melodic Doom-metal, is one of my favorites on the album. After "Wells of War" there are two slightly more of the same songs, but that's just my opinion, you can find something different there. However, the last but definitely not least title-track "Land of the Black Sun" closes with a higher imprint. I think it was a good decision to finish the recording with that song. George Prokopiou, singer of the Finnish band MOTHER OF MILLIONS intervenes in the clean voices and gives an extra touch and a different approach that was never tried on the album before. This tune creates another dimension in the AMONGRUINS’ music. I would not reject the idea that it will contribute to the exploration of this new portal for future recordings. Despite being the slowest and most experimental song on the album, it is one of the most successful.
"Land of the Black Sun" is a very special album, everything is very well taken care of, from the sound, the tracks, the duration, and even the visual work. We are witnesses to the best work so far without a doubt. There is a lot of maturity in this album, and you can see a growth on a musical level and as a band as well. Undoubtedly, this third album through Theogonia Records will consolidate this Greek group even more. Grecia es tierra de grandes agrupaciones extremas como ROTTING CHRIST, VARATHRON, SEPTIC FLESH, más heavy metaleras como FIREWIND y otras tantas. Sin embargo, la banda que nos ocupa en esta reseña viene más inclinada en una vena mas melódica y en la talla de los primeros NIGHTRAGE. AMONGRUINS comienza en el 2012 como un proyecto entre varios amigos y editan el primer disco “Bring Out Your Dead” en el 2013; en una onda Death-metalera más cruda aunque distinta. Tres años más tarde llega el segundo “No Light”, donde a mi entender, la banda comienza a despegar y hacerse notar. Cuenta con la colaboracion de Tuomas (WOLFHEART/ BEFORE THE DAWN) en el tema que nombra el disco. Y así es como llegamos a “Land of the Black Sun” siete años más tarde.
Este tercer disco todavia tiene muchos puntos de contactos con el anterior y es una buena señal porque no cambiaron el estilo a pesar del tiempo. Se mantuvieron en la misma cuerda, aunque disminuyeron más la velocidad y le pusieron más intensidad a los temas. AMONGRUINS es una agrupación que se preocupa por las melodias pero no es el típico grupo que sigue a las bandas de Gothenburg, sino que construye armonías oscuras dentro de su música. Todo esa oscuridad esta súper bien reforzada con la potente de voz de Sverd, bajista y vocalista, y les confieso que el aspecto vocal es una de los instrumentos que más me mueve en este álbum, porque se distancia mucho de Suecia y los acerca más a una identidad propia.

AMONGRUINS se inclina hacia ese enfoque del Death melódico, pero cadencioso. Al ser un trabajo más maduro se nota más técnica que velocidad. No hay prisa en mostrar las notables interpretaciones en “Tear Me Apart”, canción con la que abre el álbum. Le sigue otra colaboración de Toumas Saukkonen haciendo un intro de guitarra acústica en “End of My Fall”. La explosiva “Shattered Times” y “Our Destructive Tide” te devuelve un tanto al segundo disco y se enfatiza más en la melodía. “Wells of War”, en un inicio, me remonta a un Doom-metal cadencioso y melódico, es una de mis favoritas en este disco. Despues de “Wells of War” le siguen dos canciones un tanto repetitivas, pero es solo mi opinión, ustedes pueden encontrar algo diferente. Sin embargo, la última y que da título al disco “Land of the Black Sun” cierra con broche de oro. Creo que fue una buena decisión cerrar con esa canción. Aquí interviene en las voces limpias George Prokopiou, cantante de la banda finlandesa MOTHER OF MILLIONS y le da un toque extra y que nunca se había probado en el disco. Esta canción crea otra dimension en la música de AMONGRUINS, y no descartaría que sirviera de experimento para proximas grabaciones. A pesar de ser el tema más lento y experimental del album, es uno de los más logrados.
“Land of the Black Sun” es un disco muy especial, todo está muy bien cuidado, desde el sonido, las canciones, la duración, y hasta el trabajo visual. Estamos en presencia del mejor desempeño hasta el momento sin lugar a dudas. Hay mucha madurez en este disco y se nota un crecimiento tanto a nivel musical como de banda. Sin duda laguna, este tercer álbum a través de Theogonia Records va a consolidar a la agrupacion aun más.
