I am certain that HIVERNAL is a band you will likely be unfamiliar with. They play a style of black metal that seeks to revive sounds that refuse to become mere trends. In Solemn Silence represents their effort to establish a presence within the North Carolina scene, though their roots trace further south, specifically, to the jail-like island of Cuba. This record was released independently and is being distributed by Prevail Legacy Records; it is available in both digital and physical formats. This is for all fans of metal, specifically raw, uncompromising black metal. Scriptorium Magazine takes great pride in supporting lesser-known bands, which is why we are showcasing HIVERNAL. Check out this conversation with their founder, Nebulah, and let me know what you think afterwards.

Why did you decide to start a band in Cuba, and why did you name it HIVERNAL?
Greetings, Alex. My musical beginnings weren’t with HIVERNAL; back in 2012, I was in a band called BLACKULT with Necromancer. We played black metal, heavily inspired by both the local and Nordic scenes. Initially, I named the project HEXED, but it sounded too simple and generic. It was while listening to the French band BELENOS that I took the name from their song "Funeste et Hivernal." Creating this band was my way of expressing many ideas I had kept bottled up since my time in BLACKULT.
If you had to describe the beginnings of HIVERNAL in Cuba, how would you do it?
The beginnings were very underground, with a complete lack of interest surrounding HIVERNAL. When I started composing, I was playing in MORTUORY, a band that would later evolve into SPERMASK, and that’s where I devoted all my time. HIVERNAL was just a studio project, nothing more; it was completely detached from everything else.
Tell us about the recordings you made in Cuba.
In 2016, I finally took the plunge and released my first EP, At the River of the Souls, in digital format. The songs had already been written for two years; they got some airplay on a few radio stations in Spain, and there was even a small, allegorical featuring in a zine. Nothing else happened until 2019, when I decided to perform live, on my own, and release four more songs I’d been holding onto. I organized the live show at my own home, with the help of friends and the grindcore band HOLODOMOR. Those new tracks ended on the 2020 EP *From Depth Forgotten Path*, which was released as a limited run of 60 copies through my own label, Prevail Legacy Records, a label I co-founded with Necromancer. Seeing how well that EP was received, that’s when things started to get serious.

Tell us about this new chapter for you and for HIVERNAL in the United States.
Since I arrived in the United States, this new phase has been one of constant learning in every aspect of my life. From the moment I got here, I always kept in mind that, at some point, HIVERNAL would release its LP. This band is an extension of me; if I fail, so does HIVERNAL. But there are no limits on this earth, no tyrant to impose them on you! So, now is the right time for HIVERNAL.
Could you tell us about the entire recording process for the new album?
I brought along a demo of eight songs that eventually became what is now In Solemn Silence. It underwent many changes, the most significant being the addition of a real drummer, Exile (formerly in ANCESTOR OF KAOS). Exile deserves a huge amount of credit for this record. I followed all his technical advice regarding recording and production, as well as the timely suggestions from Conspirator (SKJULT). The journey from that initial demo to the final release took about five years. Emigrating and starting from scratch takes a long time, but I believe the wait was worth it. In Solemn Silence is the completion of everything I could never achieve in Cuba, having the freedom to create within a scene that isn’t monitored or controlled by the communists of the Cuban tyranny. That same control affects many bands, often leading them into ridiculous situations, though they don’t even realize the root cause, and many great bands are lost simply by playing along with the regime’s game. Driven by this commitment of freedom, I moved Prevail Legacy Records, which was previously based in Spain, to the United States. I took the wheel, and through this label, I released the album along with everything that goes with it: CDs, vinyls, and merchandise.
What does Prevail Legacy Records mean, and what do you have in mind for this project and HIVERNAL in this new phase?
Prevail Legacy Records is a registered business. My goal with it is to help bands from the Cuban scene that share my vision but, as they still live under a dictatorship, are unable to advance to the next stages of their careers. The label isn’t just for my own music; HIVERNAL is just a part of it, but I’ve already signed other bands that will be announced soon. Furthermore, it’s not limited to Cuban bands. Any interested bands can send their material to info@prevaillegacyrecords.com. However, there is one important requirement: if your band holds leftist views, don’t even bother. I will not compromise my principles, not after all the suffering the Left caused me over the course of 31 years. That is not negotiable! My goals for the label are to continue growing and to promote bands through live concerts. As for HIVERNAL, I’m already working on a new album, and live performances are very likely by next year. Exile is on board for drums, and Fist, a great friend of mine and a member of SPERMASK, will be on bass. Thanks for keeping the flames burning. The HIVERNAL has begun, and our legacy will prevail!

The HIVERNAL has begun and our legacy will prevail!
