Toward the end of the 1990s, Wade Black joined Crimson Glory as vocalist, replacing the band’s original singer. Upon arriving, however, he brought a far more personal and heavier style, less melancholic and theatrical than what the original vocalist used to offer. Today, he is one of those respected vocalists within the American underground metal scene, even if he has not received the international recognition enjoyed by other more media-oriented singers.
His direct and aggressive style was captured on the 1999 album Astronomica and years later that same recording would naturally serve as inspiration for his project of the same name: Wade Black’s Astronomica. A new musical venture alongside guitarist Rich Marks, through which both musicians seek to recover part of the cosmic, futuristic and progressive sound associated with that album, while at the same time creating an identity of their own within the framework of Progressive Metal.
In this way, a couple of years ago Wade Black’s Astronomica debuted with the album The Awakening (2024), which showed what Crimson Glory perhaps could have become had they continued developing the dark, futuristic sound and cosmic aesthetic of 1999. Now, in just a few days, a new single released by Rhombifer Music and endorsed by Particle Collider Records will become available, perhaps as a preview of a future album and to promote their upcoming European tour. I had the opportunity to listen to it, and I must say I was tremendously surprised by the potential they display in this new release.
Wade Black’s vocal performance on this recording is once again exceptional, even more so considering that this man is already past his fifties. His vocal display is truly impressive, with a high-pitched and raspy register that is at once powerful and full of grit, marked by great strength and a deeply emotional delivery. It is one of the most captivating aspects of his interpretation. His performance is supported by the guitars and bass of Rich Marks, whom I consider a very solid and versatile musician, inclined toward atmospheric compositions and epic melodies, judging from what I have heard of his work prior to this project. He himself wrote all the music, while the song’s lyrics were composed jointly by Rich and Wade Black.
The new track is titled “Dream” and begins with a very elegant and restrained introduction, which then transforms into an assault of galloping riffs and guitar solos that, in my opinion, are far more emotional than technical —something especially noteworthy for a musician in the style of Rich Marks.
In just over seven minutes, the song delivers introspective, almost spiritual music, yet at the same time powerful, with tempo changes, epic choruses and an atmosphere capable of maintaining the listener’s attention despite being a slightly lengthy composition.
Through his interpretation, Wade Black speaks to us about dreaming as motivation, or perhaps as a means of escape from reality. Nevertheless, the macabre laugh he unleashes near the end is a delicious detail suggesting the irony of whether he is inviting us to dream, or perhaps leading us by the hand into a dark and sinister world of nightmares. The artwork for this single features a kind of ancestral and esoteric symbolism in dark blue tones, and I believe it reflects this ambiguity perfectly —almost like a gateway into the music and magic of Astronomica.
Jason Marks is currently the band’s drummer; however, on this occasion the percussion was recorded by a British session musician named Billy Jeffs. And in my view, this is the only thing that affects the exceptional quality of the music on “Dream.” It is not that Billy Jeffs’ performance was poor, but rather that the drums deliver a somewhat flat and opaque sound in contrast to the brilliance and excellence of the rest of the music. It is unfortunate that such an exceptional track does not feature percussion executed at the same level and stature.
The style of Wade Black’s Astronomica combines the aggressiveness of Power Metal with the compositional sophistication of Progressive Metal. They build their identity upon the nostalgia of an old-school sound while at the same time incorporating modern touches, with clear influences from Crimson Glory, obviously, but also from bands such as Queensrÿche and Fates Warning, who combine epic melody and Progressive Metal without falling into tedious excesses. I hope that with songs like “Dream,” the band manages to cross the threshold that leads them to the recognition they truly deserve. By Pavel Reyes

Finalizando la década de los años ´90s, Wade Black ingresó en Crimson Glory como vocalista y como reemplazo del cantante original de aquella agrupación, pero al llegar aportó a la banda un estilo mucho más personal, más pesado, menos melancólico y teatral de lo que el cantante original acostumbraba a ofrecer. Hoy es de esos vocalistas respetados dentro del Metal underground estadounidense, aún sin llegar a recibir el reconocimiento internacional que reciben otros cantantes más mediáticos.
Su estilo directo y agresivo quedó plasmado en el disco de título “Astronomica” de 1999 y luego años más tarde, esa misma grabación serviría de inspiración natural para su proyecto del mismo nombre: Wade Black´s Astronomica. Una nueva propuesta musical junto al guitarrista Rich Marks, con la que ambos músicos buscan recuperar parte del sonido cósmico, futurista y progresivo asociado a aquel álbum y a su vez crear una identidad propia dentro del marco del Metal Progresivo.
De esta manera, hace un par de años Wade Black´s Astronomica debutó con el disco “The Awakening” (2024) que mostraba lo que quizás pudo haber sido Crimson Glory de continuar desarrollando el sonido oscuro, futurista y la estética cósmica de 1999. Ahora, dentro de unos pocos días, estará disponible el nuevo single editado por el sello Rhombifer Music, respaldado por Particle Collider Records, como un adelanto de un próximo álbum tal vez, y para promocionar su próxima gira europea. He tenido la oportunidad de escucharlo y debo decir que me ha sorprendido tremendamente el potencial que muestran en esta nueva entrega.
El desempeño vocal de Wade Black en esta grabación es una vez más excepcional, todavía más si se toma en cuenta que este señor ya pasa los cincuenta, su despliegue vocal es algo impresionante, con un registro agudo y rasgado, poderoso y con garra a la vez, de marcada potencia y una entrega muy emocional. Es de lo que más cautiva en su interpretación. Su ejecución se apoya en las guitarras y el bajo de Rich Marks, un músico muy sólido y diverso en mi opinión, con inclinación a composiciones atmosféricas y melodías épicas, según lo que he podido escuchar de su trabajo anterior a este proyecto. Él mismo es el autor de toda la música, mientras que la letra de la canción fue compuesta a cuatro manos, entre el propio Rich y Wade Black.
El nuevo tema lleva por título “Dream” y comienza con una entrada bien elegante y contenida, que luego se transforma en un asalto de riffs galopantes y solos de guitarra, que a mi parecer son mucho más emotivos que técnicos. Algo que para un músico del estilo de Rich Marks es más que notable.
La canción en poco más de 7 minutos ofrece una música introspectiva, casi espiritual, pero al mismo tiempo potente, con cambios de ritmo, coros épicos y una atmósfera que logra mantener la atención aun siendo un tema ligeramente extenso.
Desde su interpretación, Wade Black nos habla de soñar como motivación o también como vía de escape de la realidad, no obstante la risa macabra que lanza casi al final es un detalle delicioso que sugiere la ironía de si nos está invitando a soñar o si tal vez nos lleva de la mano a un mundo oscuro y tenebroso de pesadillas. El diseño artístico de la portada de este single es una especie de simbología ancestral y esotérica en tonos azul oscuro y pienso que refleja esta ambigüedad a la perfección. Algo así como una puerta de entrada a la música y la magia de Astronomica.
Jason Marks es el baterista de la banda actualmente, sin embargo la percusión fue grabada en esta ocasión por un músico de sesión británico llamado Billy Jeffs. Y esto a mi modo de ver es lo único que afecta la excepcionalidad de la música en “Dreams”. No es que la ejecución de Billy Jeff haya sido pobre, sino que la batería ofrece un sonido un poco plano y opaco, en contraste con la brillantez y la excelencia del resto de la música. Es lamentable que un tema excepcional como este no tenga una percusión hecha a su mismo nivel y altura.
El estilo de Wade Black´s Astronomica combina la agresividad del Power Metal y el nivel compositivo del Progresivo, construyen su identidad en la nostalgia de un sonido añejo y a la vez con toques modernos, con influencias del sonido de Crimson Glory obviamente, pero también de bandas como Queensrÿche o Fates Warning, que combinan melodía épica y Metal Progresivo sin caer en excesos aburridos. Espero que con canciones como “Dream” la banda logre atravesar la puerta que los lleve al reconocimiento que verdaderamente se merecen. By Pavel Reyes
